Get to Know: Jennifer Cook
How would you describe your class style/what can we expect?
My classes are a little dance-y, often faster paced, super flow-y. Although, I do have a thing for tradition and often start class with some good old Sun A’s and Sun B’s. Breath to movement, baby.
Who’s on your playlist?
Anything with a sick beat. I’m a former dancer, so music really guides my classes, and I like anything that I can count to 8 to. BUT, sometimes I’ll throw in some Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem or The National just to keep things interesting.
Where did you grow up and how long have you been in NYC?
I grew up outside Chicago! Midwesterners will always be my favorite, sorry East Coast. I also lived in Ohio (for undergrad), Colorado and Arizona, then attended graduate school in Paris, so I’ve lived all over. August will mark my 9 year mark in NYC, and 6 years in Brooklyn!
What’s your favorite hobby/activity (outside of teaching yoga)?
I’ve recently gotten into gardening, now that I have a yard and a garden. I’m trying to grow tomatoes, but I have little to no faith that they’ll be edible. It’s all about the process though, am I right? I also learned to cook in the last year, so that’s been fun. Does going Upstate count as a hobby? I’m a big reader, so send any and all book recommendations my way please and thank you! Wow, writing this makes me realize I’ve truly entered my mid-30’s. It’s fantastic. Oh, I also work in the fashion/luxury outdoor/activewear industry as my day job, so I guess that counts too. And finally, pre-COVID, I’d call travel my favorite activity, so I can’t wait for the day we can do that again!
Any must-visit restaurants or shops in Brooklyn?
I live in Williamsburg, so most of my favorites are there. Four Horsemen, Horses & Divorces, Bernie’s, Hotel Delmano. But, Buvette in the West Village is my all time favorite restaurant (worth the trek and the wait). And I work for Westerlind, so if you’re in the city and shopping, I have to tell you to go there :)
Tell us one thing we would be surprised to know about you…
I don’t know that' I’d call anything about myself particularly surprising…just your classic SVU loving, world-traveling, Williamsburg-dwelling, type-A, Virgo yoga instructor :)
